Practicing mindfulness is a popular way to calm the mind, reduce stress, and become more aware of the present moment.  

 However, practicing mindfulness, especially via meditation, does not come easily for everyone. 

 If this is the case for you, here are five engaging mindfulness activities (that aren’t meditation) that you can try. 

 

1- Go on a walk 

Getting present can be as easy as taking a walk around your block. The steady repetition and slow pace of walking naturally calms the mind and body. This makes walking a great opportunity to get in touch with the present moment. When walking, you can take in your surroundings, noticing the sights and sounds around you. 

 

2- Monotask

You can practice mindfulness while still being productive. In fact, with monotasking, mindfulness can enhance your productivity. 

 

Monotasking means focusing on one task at a time. It could look like eating at the table instead of in front of the television. Or it could look like folding laundry without distraction, noticing the feeling of the clothes and taking in its fresh scents. 

 

3- Solve a puzzle 

Solving a puzzle requires you to focus and pay attention, which makes it a great mindfulness activity. Plus, puzzles are a fun activity that you can do alone or with friends. 

 

Puzzles that encourage mindfulness include sudoku, word searches, crosswords, and riddles. Checking in and noticing when you’re feeling confused or frustrated throughout this process can further foster mindfulness. 

 

4- Color 

Adult coloring books are popular for a reason. Coloring lets you channel your inner child and release stress in a creative way. It is a relaxing activity that allows you to shift into the present moment and unwind. Plus, you only need some crayons or pencils and paper to color, giving your mind a much needed break from screens. 

 

5- Practice Yoga 

If you want a mindfulness activity that gets you moving, then yoga is perfect for you. Yoga challenges you to focus on your breath and notice the sensations of your body through movement. It can be a great way to stretch the body, take note of your feelings, and reset after a stressful day. Plus, it is great for your physical health. 

 

Finding the time to practice mindfulness throughout your busy day may seem challenging, but there are plenty of opportunities to do so. You can use these five mindfulness activities as a simple way to unwind and get in touch with the present moment.
