If you are a fan of drinking matcha or have used it in recipes before, you have likely come across different kinds of matcha. This is because matcha is generally labeled as either ceremonial grade matcha or culinary grade matcha. While these two grades might look similar on the shelf, they are designed to serve different purposes.

Are you wondering which matcha grade is right for you? This article discusses the difference between ceremonial grade and culinary grade matcha, including when to use each kind.

What is ceremonial grade matcha?

Ceremonial grade matcha is the highest quality grade of matcha available for consumption. Its taste is often more subtle than culinary grade matcha. In addition, its taste tends to be more nuanced and contains more notes than a culinary grade. It was traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. Today, it should be used primarily in matcha beverages.

How to use ceremonial grade matcha

To prepare ceremonial grade matcha, you will need a scoop, a whisk, a matcha bowl, and hot water. Using the scoop, get a teaspoon or two of matcha powder and place it in the matcha bowl. Then, add a small amount of water into the bowl. Whisk the matcha powder and water until it is smooth and free of lumps. From there, you can pour your matcha into a cup and add water or milk for a delicious latte beverage.

What is culinary grade matcha?

When it comes to quality, culinary grade matcha is a step below ceremonial grade matcha. Its taste is often stronger but less nuanced than ceremonial grade matcha. Because of this, culinary grade matcha is less expensive and better suited for recipes including smoothies and baked goods.

How to use culinary grade matcha

How you use culinary grade matcha is entirely up to you! It can be used to prepare a matcha latte or used as an ingredient in smoothies and baked goods.
